520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Each year, nearly three million Americans are evicted from their homes. With no right to counsel in housing court, nine in ten tenants enter the courtroom alone. The fallout that results from this power imbalance is devastating: housing insecurity creates financial instability and a range of adverse social consequences. Neighbourhoods with high eviction rates see falling property values, higher unemployment, and require more social services. Access to counsel in eviction proceedings curbs these ill effects: 96% of tenants with legal representation remain in their homes. |
