520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | In the year 2000 Sydney will be the host city for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. The Olympics are expected to contribute $3 billion to Australia's economy from 1.3 million tourists visiting the country before, during and after the games. The benefits to the tourism industry, business development and international trade are clearly substantial.

The experience of cities which have hosted hallmark events (such as Olympics and Expos) in the past suggests however, that the staging of such events also has the potential to involve negative housing impacts. The need for the host city to provide facilities, roads and other infrastructure and visitor accommodation can lead to impacts such as the loss of low cost accommodation and rent increases.

To determine the likelihood and scale of any potential housing impacts on Sydney resulting from the 2000 Games, the NSW Department of Fair Trading commissioned a study in to these issues. |
