N2  - This study arose out of a concern to document the experience of residents of special retirement accommodation. Member organisations of the Aged Care Coalition, - the Australian Consumers' Association, the Combined Pensioners' Association, the NSW Council of Social Service, Redfern Legal Centre and the Social Welfare Action Group, - had all received approaches from residents seeking assistance to change aspects of life which they found distressing. 
This study documents the experiences of 60 residents of retirement accommodation, 20 each from boarding houses, hostels and independent units. These experiences provide a valuable and unique insight by exploring the feelings and beliefs of residents and by providing residents with the opportunity t o speak for themselves.
