520 | _aPeople with mental health problems and disorders can experience difficulties in accessing affordable, safe and stable housing. Illness can disrupt tenancies and the ability of an individual to maintain their housing. A significant proportion of homeless people and people living in sub-standard or marginal housing have a mental illness. Social housing linked to support plays an important role in assisting people on low-incomes with a mental illness to live successfully in the community. The Housing and Accommodation Support Initiative (HASI) is a partnership program funded by the New South Wales (NSW) Government that ensures stable housing linked to specialist support for people with mental illness. The HASI Resource Manual informs the development and implementation of HASI across NSW. It is intended as a 'living' document that will expand and develop with the initiative. It defines a common approach to housing and accommodation support for the mentally ill in NSW and clarifies the differing aspects, which affect the day-to-day running of the program. The guidelines are consistent with an interagency model of service delivery for the provision of mental health services in the community and includes as core components: flexible service delivery tailored to individual needs; integration; continuum of care and responsiveness to need. | ||
