520 | _aThe Rooming Houses Act, which applies to owners and residents of rooming houses, was introduced in Victoria on 1 November 1990. The Act is one of three pieces of state legislation outlining the rights and duties of tenants and landlords: the Residential Tenancies Act, the Caravan parks and Movable Dwellings Act and the Rooming Houses Act. Historically, the Tenants Union of Victoria has promoted the need for a single act to cover all Tenants. The problem, however, has been in talking the legislators into the fact that rooming house residents need the same security and protection as tenants in flats or houses. As a result, we now have an Act which deals specifically with rooming houses and while it provides some protection for residents, it is still not perfect. This booklet outlines your rights and shows you how to use them. It suggests problems you are likely to have and ways in which you can use the law to deal with them. | ||
