Single Woman and Homelessness - Which Way is Home?

By: Material type: TextTextPublication details: VIC Catholic Commission for Justice, Development & Peace 2002Description: 20 pagesSubject(s): Summary: Women-headed households make up over 70% of the world's homeless. Homelessness is not however unique to societies with third world economies. It is increasingly a phenomenon experienced by women in societies with advanced capitalist economies such as Australia. Single women are often described as the 'hidden homeless'; their needs often overlooked within a context of overwhelming unmet need. The purpose of this discussion paper is to provide an overview of the key issues in relation to homelessness in Melbourne as it affects single women without dependent children. This discussion paper draws upon interviews with women who have experienced homelessness and current literature relating to housing and homelessness.
